A Game of Giant Proportions

Calgary Hitmen vs. Vancouver Giants @ Pacific Coliseum
2-0 Final

What a welcoming the Hitmen got.  Wet, wet, slightly windy, cool - did I mention wet?  Whatever.  It's a rivalry and it's better they get an omen of what was to come than nothing at all, I s'pose.

Approximately 8:30 left in the opening period, Calgary get a SHG from Brandon Kozun.  Totally changed the momentum from our's (Giants) to the H-men.

Second period would be where the turn of the tides occur.  Within the 90 seconds of the opening puck-drop, WE GOT A FIGHT!  Ian Schultz of Calgary and Kevin Connauton  of Vancouver would drop the gloves and knock back a few.  But near the half-way mark of the period, another good bout would occur.  Brandon Scholten who impressed the Giants' coaching staff with a couple of good fights in the pre decided to go at it with Jessi Hilton.  They'd both get a few good ones but Brandon had the best hits by far!  By unanimous vote, Brandon won the fight.

The 1-0 scoreline would hold until the final 25 seconds where it would break - break into a 2-0 lead.  Jamie Tucker headed to the bench for the extra attacker in the final minute of play and when he did, Ian Schultz banked it into the yawning net.

Despite the loss, it was a pretty good game and great effort by the G-men.  We had pressure, shots, hits, and chances.  But Martin Jones was just that much better in the Calgary goal.  Despite having all the man-advantage chances, we failed to cash in on them.  I guess this time, our pretty damn good wasn't enough.

Calgary will take their new 2 points and move ahead of the Portland Winterhawks to takeover the 1st position in the W and Vancouver comfortably place themselves three points behind Calgary, one behind Portland, in the 3rd position.

3 stars:
(1) Martin Jones (justly deserved.  No complaint here.)
(2) Craig Cunningham (who just kept delivering and starting chances for the Giants)
(3) Brandon Kozun
