Game of the Night

Edmonton Oil Kings vs. Vancouver Giants @ Pacific Coliseum
2-5 Final

Tonight was the Vancouver Giants' Teddy Bear Toss night!  And no body ever does this like we do.  As a proud participant, this is what makes everyone's year.  Hate how I didn't do it this year.

After losing last night 5-4 to the Hitmen, Coach Hay chose to stick with Mark Segal as the one to start between the pipes.

First goal would come around by 17:35 of the opening period.  First off, let me just say that our top line of Lance Bouma, Brendan Gallagher, and Craig Cunningham aren't the prettiest of goal-makers.  They get the ugly goals.  There are some pretty ones, but a majority are the nitty-gritty.  This goal was no exception.  Galls and Craig crashed the net with Kevin Connauton (Canucks prospect) starting the play with a pass to Brendan.  Gallsy then centers the puck for Craig who lights the lamp with a PPG on their first PP!

We brought the first intermission early due to the goal.  And down came the rain - of TEDDY BEARS!  This year, I think it was about 1500 bears were thrown on to the ice.  I'm not quite sure, but the rink was loaded!

At the half-way mark of the second, Craig netted his second of the night!  We all started with a face-off in our zone and great puck movement skills by our top line!  Bouma created the play with a pass up to Gallsy.  The puck was knocked out of Galls's stick but it came right to Craig's.  All they did was what they were born (and trained) to do - score!

5 clicks after the goal, Edmonton's Adrian van der Mosselaer (what a mouth full) and Brett Lyon drop their mittens for a fight at centre ice!  Wasn't a big fight, but it did create some energy.

The next goal was a miraculous one!  Craig passed the puck to Brendan who was sandwiched between four Oil Kings!  Some how, Brendan got his stick on it and got the puck to go past Jung and increase their lead to 3.  The goal got Brendan his 20th of the season and it looks like there's going to be a lot more.

Now if you ignored the pervious paragraphs, pay some attention to this one!  This play is passing to the finest point near perFECtion!  Bouma started it all with a breaking play.  Little pass to Galls who, with Bouma, tied up the Edmonton defence, passed the rubber disk to Cunningham who cashed in for the HAT TRICK!  First he made it rain Teddy Bears, now he's making it rain hats!  Someone's Christmas came early, eh?

In the dying minutes of the game, Lance Bouma got the EN-SHG on a break away!  Why is this one so important?  Because it's Lance's 100th WHL career point!  Woot, woot!

Edmonton's Mark Pysyk got to net two goals past Segal in the third but his efforts wouldn't be close to enough to save Edmonton from losing their second in a row.

Giants were looking very good tonight.  Even if only the top line registered points, the other three were just as great without hitting the sheet!  Especially our third and fourth lines creating energy and offence!  Our defence was near to shut-down with the exception of those two goals.  Vancouver's PK was perfect by killing all four penalties and were 1/3 on the PP.

My 3 Stars:
(1) Craig Cunningham
(2) Lance Bouma
(3) Brendan Gallagher

Official 3 stars:
