Game of the Night

Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames @ Pengrowth Saddledome
5-1 Final

After an 8-game home-stand that finished 6-2, the Canucks hit the road again for yet another 4-game road trip.  Winning isn't a bad way to start.

7:15 into the opening period, Calgary's Jarome Iginla scored his 20th of the season!  After Craig Conroy had won the face-off in the attacking zone, Jay Bouwmeester with the snapper from the blue.  Iggy was just lucky enough to get the tip-in past Luongo.

Just 1:16 later (18:31), Henrik Sedin netted his 18th of the season!  A good battle along the boards, Willie Mitchell slapped his shot wide of the net.  Henrik beat Ryan Regher to the puck and shoveled it into the yawning cage!

If you don't think the Canucks are any good yet, just wait 34 seconds later when we get another.  Yup.  Just 34 seconds after Hank's goal, Kyle 'Abs of Steel' Wellwood registered his 3rd of the year.  The highly touted Finnish goalie, Miikka Kiprusoff, isn't looking now.  A 2-on-2 rush with Alex Burrows and Welly rushing in created quite a magical goal.  Burrs had the shot that just went across the crease and around to the other side.  You'd never expected this one to go in, but Welly picked it up and shoveled it between the post and Kipper's skate.

69 seconds left in the period, the red hot Mason Raymond with his 15th of the season increasing his career best.  Mikael Samuelsson had the powerful shot-pass that Mase redirected under the arm of the Finnish goaltender.

Tonight wasn't much of a Calgary night.  Despite getting the first goal and having a solid goalie like Kipper, this was a very off night.  Case and point, our 4th goal of the night.

With only 25 seconds left, a battle in between the two team benches causes Mase to make the flip pass down the ice.  A couple of lucky bounces after the pass, Kipper has let the fourth goal in on 13 shots.

Starting the second, Kipper is donning the baseball cap instead of the mask and back-up Curtis McElhinney is in the net instead.

On the PP, Christian Ehrhoff made a quick pass to Alexander Edler (playing only his second game after coming back from injury) at the high slot.  Eddie got his cross-ice pass to Mase.  With the snap of his fingers and his shot, Mason Raymond has his FIRST NHL-CAREER HAT TRICK!  (And if you're like me, you'll enjoy the celebration done by Kes.)

What is the Canucks-Flames rivalry without some spilt blood?  Around 6:30 left, Kevin Bieksa and Eric Nystrom drop their gloves for the first fight of the night.  The rugged style of this fight really made my night.  Turning and throwing, both Nystrom and Bieksa land some GREAT hits on each other to make even the spectators tired.

4 minutes later, Tanner Glass and Brando Prust do their own interpretation of the tango.  Right off the draw, the two go at it.  Prust landed most of the hits, but props to Tanner to hang in there and land a few right back.  Unfortunately, Tanner got evicted from the game because of something (I'm not sure).

Third period wouldn't be needed as the game finished on a good note for the away team.

3 stars:
(1) Mason Raymond
(2) Willie Mitchell
(3) Roberto Luongo

(Not much of the emotional display, Welly is)
