NHL Winter Classic
Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins @ Fenway Park
1-2 Final OT
The annual winter classic went down this afternoon/morning at Fenway. Even if I hate the Bruins and don't care much for the Flyers, this is the way I like to celebrate the first day of the new year. HOCKEY STYLE!
And if anyone can, grab me a pom-pom toque! They are the awesome!
Unfortunately, due to Milan's (Lucic) injury he sustained just a few weeks ago, he won't be playing in the Classic. I know how forward Looch was looking for it and it sucks that he can't play.
On a happier note, it's Jeff Carter's birthday! And he's playing in a game of a lifetime!
What is the best way to start the game off? With the Dropkick Murphys performing "I'm Shipping Up to Boston"! Honestly, I actually like that song (despite it involving Boston). But it got me pumped up (a tad).
The energy was excellent right from the face-off! The speed these two teams were playing at, some good early saves, and the crowd was just electrifying!
First fight in winter classic history! Daniel Carcillo and Shawn Thornton made history as the the first two to drop their gloves in the Winter Classic. It was short, but it showed what the hockey code was all about. But after the fight, Carcillo did something I didn't approve of, but it showed a good show of character.
I love how they mic'd a couple of guys. Mark Recchi of the Bs had one of them. Some point during the game, he was talking about the temperature of the bench. "Turn the heater back up, Scotty!" The mic on the Flyers bench is on Chris Pronger.
Can you believe that they're using a fire hydrant to fix the ice?
No matter how great the first period was played, the second period was where we got our first goal. Scott Hartnell went to the net hard and just got Tim Thomas off his skates (but he made the great save). Timmy Tom focuses on Hartnell, and when he shoves him out of the way, Danny Syvret takes the slapshot and Jeff Carter just got the tip through his legs and through traffic for the first goal of this year's Classic.
Only in the dying moments of the second did the Bruins pick up their game.
"7th inning" they played 'Sweet Caroline' much to the tradition at Fenway. Ah, too bad it isn't look so sweet for B-Town right now.
Didn't the Bs' wish come true? With 2:20 left before the buzzer, they get what they needed to extend this hockey game! David Krejci at the point, passed it down to Derek Morris in the high slot. Morris had the great shot-pass to Mark Recchi who tipped it in perfectly past Michael Leighton. Too bad Blake Wheeler didn't get a point for the excellent screen blocking the view of Leighton. You can't stop what you can't see.
Flyers had excellent chances in OT to finish the game, but they just couldn't pull it together to score! But after all the scrambling and nothing in that end, you go down to the other and you get FIREWORKS! Not only that, but a GWG! The big captain Zdeno Chara started it all for his team. Patrice Bergeron made the shot-pass that has been working for them quite well and Marco Sturm with the tip-in at the front of the net. It was quite simple, but everything interlaced made it much more complicated
Though they weren't looking the tip-top form from the face-off, the game worked down to be in Boston's favour. Shows you that energy goes a long way...
3 stars: (Only two this time and chosen by the NHL)
(1) Marco Sturm
(2) Michael Leighton
Observe the beauty of the Winter Fenway!
(I like this guy's jersey)
I love the sky!
