A Fine, Fierce, Free Frenzy


'Tis that time of year again!  The day some teams dream of or fret over.  It's when you see either your favourite players signed or lost.  It is also the time when general managers make you drag your hands over your face in agony or lift your arms up into the air in glee.

The Free Agency Market is OPEN!


  • Ottawa Senators have signed Sergei Gonchar to a 3-year deal worth $5.5 million a season (so if my math is correct, he'll be earning $16.5 million over those 3 years).
    • Forward Jesse Winchester has also been signed by the Sens.  His contract is said to be 2-years long, and worth $1.5 million.
  • Calgary Flames have signed Alex Tanguay to a 1-year contract worth $1.7 million 
    • After an... interesting 2009-10 season, Olli Jokinen has signed a 2-year, $6 million contract.
  • New York Rangers have signed goalie Martin Biron to a 2-year, $1.75 million contract.  
    • They have also re-signed centre Erik Christensen to a contract for 2-years seeing him earn $1.95 million
    • Derek Boogard has been signed by the Rangers to a 4-year deal seeing him earn $6.6 million
    • NYR have given Derek Stepan his first profession contract.
    • And not only that, they signed Vaclav Prospal to a 1-year contract worth $2.1 million.
  • Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed defenceman Braydon Coburn to the franchise for 2-years, where he'll earn a total of $6.4 million 
    • Flyers have also signed Sean O'Donnell to a 1-year contract worth $1 million
    • Taking no time at all, they also inked Jody Shelley to a 3-year contract where he'll earn $3.3 million ($1.1 mill a year).
  • Boston Bruins have re-signed a player of their own.  Daniel Paille has been re-signed to the franchise for $2.15 million over 2-years.
    • The Bruins have signed Jeremy Reich to a 1-year contract
  • St. Louis Blues have signed Vladimir Sobotka has also been re-signed by the Bs to a 1-year, $750,000 contract
    • The Blues have also re-signed forward Alex Steen to a 4-year contract extension.
  • Montreal Canadiens have signed veteran goalie Alex Auld to a 1-year contract, seeing him earn $1 million.
    • Canadiens have also signed Curtis Sanford to a 1-year, 2-way contract.  At the NHL level, he will earn $550,000; at the AHL, he'll receive a $200,000 paycheque.  I'm not so happy about this.  I wasn't happy with him in Vancouver, I ain't gonna be happy about him being in Motreal.
    • Montreal have also inked Dustin Boyd to a 1-year contract worth $650,000. 
    • Carolina Hurricanes have snatched up defenceman Anton Babchuk to a 1-year contract worth $1.4 million
      • The Canes have come to terms with Jonathan Matsumoto to a 2-year, two-way contract.  In the first year, Matsumoto will earn $500,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 in the AHL.  In the second year, he will earn $525,000 at the NHL, and $105,000 in the AHL.
    • Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Lady Byng winner Martin St. Louis to a 4-year contract extension worth $22.5 million.  
      • After being traded the Habs, Dan Ellis is now with the Lightning on a 2-year deal worth $3 million
    • Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenceman Zbynek Michalek to a 5-year, $20 million contract.
      • The Pens have also signed Paul Martin.  Martin is bound to the club for 5-years and will earn $25 million in his stay.
    • Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Colby Armstrong to a 3-year contract, where he'll earn $9 million.
      • They also signed Joey Crabb to a 2-way deal.  At the NHL level, he'll earn $525,000; at the AHL level, he'll receive $200,000.
    • After reporting than Evgeni Nabokov wouldn't return, San Jose Sharks have signed Antero Nittymaki to a 2-year, $4 million contract. 
      • The Sharks have also signed forward Cam MacIntyre to a 2-year deals
    • Vancouver Canucks have signed Joel Perrault to a 1-year contract worth $510,000
      • And not only him was signed.  Manny Malhotra has been snatched up by the Canucks to a 3-year, $7.5 million contract with a no-trade clause. 
      • This made me a little happier: Dan Hamhuis has signed with the Vancouver team for $4.5 million a year for 6 years (for a total of $27 million).
      • Jeff Tambellini is now with the Canucks on a 1-year contract.
    • Phoenix Coyotes have signed Derek Morris to a $11 million contract over 4-years.
      • They didn't stop there.  Ray Whitney has been signed by the Yotes to a 2-year contract.  $6 million will be earned with the desert dogs.
    • Nashville Predators signed forward Jonas Anderson from Sweden to a 1-year contract worth $675,000
      • The Preds have re-signed defenceman Teemu Laakso to a 1-year, two-way contract.
    • Anaheim Ducks have put pen to paper by signing Toni Lydman to a $3 million contract being paid through 3 years.
      • The Ducks have re-signed Saku Koivu to a 2-year, worth $5 milllion
    • New Jersey Devils have signed Henrik Tallinder to a 4-year contract where he'll receive $13.5 million.
      • The Devils have also signed Anton Volchenkov to a 6-year contract worth $25.5 million with a no-trade clause.
      • Another signing is Johan Hedberg with the Devils on a 1-year, $1.5 million contract.
    • Edmonton Oilers have inked Kurtis Foster to a 2-year, $3.6 million contract. 
      • Oilers have also signed Colin Fraseer to a 2-year contract worth $1.65 million.
    • Dallas Stars have signed two players to entry-level contracts.  Suisse Severin Blindenbacher to a 1-year, entry-level contract.  Jace Coyle is the other skater signed to a 3-year, entry-level contract.
      • And as of now, Chicago have lost 8 players (through trade or free agency) to other teams.  The Stars have signed Adam Burish to a 2-year contract worth $2.3 million.
      • Stars also took Andrew Raycroft (Rayzor!!) for 2-years.
    • Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed Derek MacKenzie to a 2-year, two-way contract 
    • Atlanta Thrashrs have inked goalie Chris Mason to a 2-year deal worth $3.7 million.  Mason will earn $1.6 mill in the first year, $2.6 in the second.
    • Buffalo Sabres have re-signed Jordan Leopold to a 3-year contract worth $9 million.
    • Minnesota Wild have made an offer and got an agreement with Matt CullenCullen's contract keeps him with the Wild for 3-years, earning $10.5 million
      • They've also signed Eric Nystrom to a 3-year, $4.2 million.
    • Chicago Blackhawks have signed John Scott to a 2-year contract worth $1.025 million.
    In trade news:
    • Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defenceman Andrej Meszaros to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft
    • Chicago Blackhawks and Atlanta Thrashers have come to terms with eachother.  Thrashers acquired Andrew Ladd in exchange for prospect Ivan Vishnevsky and a second-round draft pick.
    And in just other news:
    • The Phoenix Coyotes bought out Petteri Nokaleinen's contract.
